I am in the process of trying to make my first site template for WordPress 1.5. At this point, I am stressing attempt. I used the default word press index and the style sheet from my current theme as a “jumping off point.” I guess I am having a bit of designers block.
It is not that it is that difficult to change the style sheet around, but there is a surprisingly large amount of thought going into this. I am looking for simplicity of design, but also something that stands out in your mind, but not so much so as to distract from the content.
I am going for a family theme, since this is a family site. Trying to balance the kids/adult taste into the theme is proving to be difficult for me, too. The first thing that I had to choose was the font. I finally decided on Arial, since it is common and neutral, but seems more child friendly that either Times Or Verdana/Helvetica.
Font sizes are also proving to be difficult for me. I want everything to be readable, but to do that and still have the content be the most visible part of the page, it would have to be too large for my taste.
I am still debating on background images for the titles and the menu. For now I am going to stick with color.
