I have always wanted more since I chose a name for my blog. The name was chosen out of necessity rather than invention. The idea was born over a decade ago, in the only class I have taken regarding the intarweb. (Surprisingly, this was a required course for education majors.) I needed a name that better fit the site’s persona and domain.
When my parents married, they happened to have the same initials. In a tradition I hope passed with the Seventies, they continued it and named me and my sister in the same vain, with the same initials. I always needed clarification on their reasoning, even when I had my children. Nevertheless, that has stuck with me as an ideal of family. We are all R.J.Carpenters.
My nearest family was over 500 miles away when my first son was born. I needed a way to share my experiences as a new father with friends and family. A couple of months later, rjcarpenter.com was born. Born from fatherhood, inspired by parentage … a study of family.
I have always considered my experiences those of a family guy. A family guy needed to describe what I was attempting adequately. I was writing not only about family but about all of the aspects that affect the family. Parenthood, marriage, and life have a steep, never-ending learning curve. What word could adequately describe all of this?
-logy or -ology: suff.
- Discourse; expression
- Science; theory; study
Life is a study, and I chose a name in revere of those dynamics.
